Private Flat
Sometimes real tenacity is required to secure planning permission
for a design. This apartment’s glass extension that appears
to float over a pool was just such an occasion.
The apartment was originally a school hall that had been converted
into flats by a private developer. The space was high, but dark and
impractically divided.
Our architectural solution included reconfiguring the staircase, major
demolitions to allow in light, replanning the kitchen, building the
glass extension and redesigning the garden.
The result completely changed the apartment’s aspect and appearance
and introduced a real sense of drama.
Design features
• the glazed extension with Miesian overtones ‘floats’
over a pool of calm water
• the spacious living areas can be zoned off for a more intimate
atmosphere
• a massive sliding door enveloped in burgundy cowhide provides
a warmly tactile moving wall to open/close off the study area
• the big glazed doors to the kitchen and gym pivots within
recesses to open up the whole of space if desired
• bathrooms have with mosaic tiling, timber floors and dark
oak veneered cabinets designed in-house
• an existing L shaped garden was transformed by creating a
beautiful stone terrace on one side, with a narrow water channel that
allows water to subtly flow into the pool
• a canopy of Sumachs created a wooded area giving the illusion
of a much bigger garden leading to a kitchen garden and a second lower
terrace planted with herbs
• a four-point swing with a vista to the long side of the L
