Private
apartment
The design for this apartment - originally two flats above a shop
on London’s Westbourne Grove – was complicated because
the client was undecided whether he would live there himself, let
it or sell it. We therefore created a design that was appropriate
for all three eventualities.
The solution was to create a large, light and airy loft-like space,
but where sliding glass doors concealed in the walls could be used
to close off areas when a more intimate environment was required.
A strongly contemporary feel was created by the consistent and imaginatively
varied use of concrete, timber and glass.
As it turned out, the owner decided to put the apartment on the market.
It sold to an architect for a very high price for what at the time
was the ‘wrong’ end of Westbourne Grove.
Design features
• the staircase, in concrete with timber treads and glass balustrades,
rises three storeys to a roof light to flood the flat with light
• a glass partition, with glazed panels for depth and warmth,
divides the stairs and dining area
• the kitchen worktop is in polished concrete with a glass screen
and splashback for richness in texture
• the bathroom features coloured glass and walnut veneered panels
and a solid walnut worktop for a luxurious feel
• two beautifully planted roof terraces are connected by a ship’s
ladder
